Is It Time To Downsize Your Home?

As we age, it brings up a lot of questions that we just haven’t had to face before. One of which is whether or not your current home situation is right for you and your loved ones. There are lots of questions that go into figuring this out and unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Today, we are going to explore some of the options and key decision points that you may find helpful along the way in your journey to finding the perfect living situation.

Examining Your Current Situation

Is your current home a source of happiness? Or are you finding it becoming more and more stressful to maintain. No matter the house, there are going to be chores and tasks that must be done in order to maintain it in a good working order. This includes the lawn and garden and surrounding property. Are you finding that you and your spouse are dreading the constant yard upkeep? Is the house too large to keep clean and organized as you’d like it? If so, then you may want to consider downsizing.

Looking At Income VS Living Situation

What percentage of your monthly income (many of us are on a fixed income!) does your home’s mortgage take up? What other financial costs go along with your home? Are the electricity bills more than you’d like? What about the HVAC bills? If you think that you are spending too much of your precious monthly budget on bills and mortgage payments, then you may be in line for a downsize.

Examining Your Home For Unused Space

Even an easy to maintain home may be too big for you to easily navigate. Are you finding that you aren’t using every room or space in your house on a regular basis? If you have a few unused or rarely used areas of your home, then you are just paying good money in order to heat and cool them and to clean them. If you were to downsize, you will be able to get the most out of the space that you have and be able to not worry about several rooms that are just collecting dust and costing you extra money.

Does Your Mobility Play A Role?

Even if we are perfectly healthy as we age, we can still find ourselves with less and less mobility as we get older. Does your home have an upstairs area? Do you have a basement or cellar that you rarely use or that you are finding it harder and harder to get down into? If so, then you may want to consider switching to a house that is a single level and with a more open floor plan to ensure that you can use every room when you need it.
